About this article

If you’re one of those students who wish to study in the USA or Canada, you probably have been told to get your SATs done. SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test, it is most commonly used by universities to select students for admission to undergraduate courses. A good SAT score is very important; however, it is not the only criteria required, other aspects such as your GPA, academic transcript, letter of recommendation (LoR), interviews and personal essays all play a vital role in getting admission.

SAT is offered 6 times internationally (in October, November, December, January, May, and June). It is always better to take the earliest one, that way you will get a chance to assess the situation and retake the exam if needed.

The basic fee for the exam is $52, but it varies based on the country of the applicant. For Indian applicants, the fee for SAT comes out to be $106 (with a written essay), or $94 (without an essay).

In Indian Rupees, the SAT exam fee is around 6200-7000 INR.

Preparation

When it comes to preparing for the SATs, no fixed plan varies from one individual to another. However, every student must spend at least a couple of months preparing for the SATs. If you are not clear about where to begin you can always start by looking at the Official SAT study guide, which provides clear and in-depth information to students. This will help the student know what they can expect from the SATs and based on that they can start the preparation.

Along with this, there are many websites which offer practice tests, these tests can be very useful as they are designed using previous exam papers and provide scores at the end of the practice tests which helps candidates to know where they stand and what areas they need to improve.

We recommend you follow these steps.

  • Take the SAT practice test at the beginning of the eleventh class to get a starting score.
  • Figure out the target SAT score based on the average SAT score at the most competitive school on the list of shortlisted colleges.
  • Start studying either during the eleventh class or the beginning of the twelfth class. The intensity of your studies will vary by what kind of colleges you want to get into, starting score.
  • Take SAT in Sept-Oct; this will ensure you have enough time for the admissions process.
