Biology in the UK

Biology courses include practical and theoretical work with a mix of lectures, seminars, and labs. Biology majors can expect to gain a deeper understanding of cell theory, evolution, genetics, energy, and homeostasis. The majority of universities will offer biology degree programs, as well as collaborative degree programs with other sciences or the social sciences. Some universities will offer more specialized biological science degrees, such as zoology or ecology. Exams, coursework, presentations, and lab work will all be evaluated. Students will frequently be forced to perform their own research in order to answer a question of their choosing, resulting in the talent that companies need. Because this is usually done in a group, students will be honing their communication, delegating, research, and management abilities.

Why study this subject?

Biology may be the appropriate choice for you if you enjoy learning about living things and how they interact. A biology major will provide you with a comprehensive awareness of the natural world. It also teaches you how to conduct research, solve problems, organize yourself, and think critically. With a biology degree, you'll have access to a wide range of intriguing work prospects. Whether you choose to work in the environment, agriculture, wildlife, botany, laboratory services, or another science-related field, you'll find that the discipline offers a wide range of opportunities.

Students who major in biology have more options when it comes to their job routes. Biology majors can learn about all elements of biology, from ecology to cells to marine life, by not focusing on a single discipline. Do you want to do fieldwork as well as work in a lab? You can do both by studying Biology. Unlike particular biology specialities, biology allows you to do both; one week you can put on a lab coat and examine cells under a microscope, and the next week you may put on your boots and go hiking in the woods. Majoring in biology during your undergraduate studies is a smart decision if you want to continue your studies after graduation. Continuing your studies to the post-graduate level is a natural move because it is research-focused and flexible enough to adapt to a variety of subjects.

Career prospects?

Biology degrees cover a wide range of topics; thus biology graduates can expect a diverse range of employment. With a biology degree, you could work in the following fields:

  • Scientists specializing in research
  • Pharmacologist
  • Biologist
  • Ecologist
  • Officer in charge of environmental protection
  • Biotechnologist
  • Expert in forensic science
  • Roles of government agencies
  • Author of scientific articles
  • Teacher

Biology occupations can lead you to study living organisms to aid in the development of biological knowledge and understanding of life processes for a variety of objectives, including disease treatment and environmental preservation. Many biology degree graduates choose to pursue postgraduate education in a specialized or related topic in order to expand their knowledge and advance their careers, even if it isn't always essential.

Cost of program and average cost of living

The cost of tuition for the academic year 2021 is £9,250.

Every year, the University examines its tuition costs. The current expectation is that the University would raise fees for each year of study in accordance with the inflation rate set by Parliament. This is most likely the Retail Price Index (RPIX)* inflation indicator. This means that your tuition will increase in lockstep with inflation each year of study. To guarantee that higher education remains accessible to all, student fee loans are projected to rise in line with the fee cap. The £9,250 charge has several exclusions. Some of the programs have fees that are lower than the entire £9,250. Foundation programs; at Carmel College and Birkenhead Sixth Form College, the fee for the foundation year of specified programs is £5,140. Programs featuring a Foundation component include: Wirral Metropolitan College collaborates on the Psychology BSc (Hons) (2+2 program with Foundation element). Wirral Metropolitan College sets the cost for the first two years. Programs that include a year in industry or a year abroad: students who spend a full year in the industry pay £1,850. The cost of studying abroad for a full year is £1,385.

Foreign students must pay the full cost of their tuition in the United Kingdom, with each university determining its own international rates. Fees for undergraduate programs, as well as a comprehensive list of fees, may be found on our International fees website. Please see our guidelines for students in the UK exiting the EU for information on tuition fees and support for EU students.
