University Fees for International Students in 2022

In the United Kingdom, the annual tuition fees for international undergraduate students started at £11,400 (INR 10 lacs) in 2021/22. This rose to as much as £32,081 (INR 35 lacs).

For undergraduate medical degrees, the tuition fees fell between £25,000 (INR 25 lacs) – £67,892 (INR 67 lacs).

However, most universities' fees for the majority of subjects fell somewhere between £10,000 – £20,000 (INR 10 lacs – 20 lacs). The annual tuition fees for international postgraduate students ranged between £7,000 and £51,360 (INR 7 lacs to 51 lacs) in 2021/22. The majority of postgraduate courses at most universities, however, fall within a certain range and are charged between £12,000 and £25,000.

The cost of tuition for international students varies greatly depending on the university, the course of study, and the level of study. There are no set rules for how to calculate the cost, but there are four factors to consider when estimating the price of your degree:

  • The university ranking - In general, the more prestigious a university is, the more expensive it is likely to be. Check out the top 10 universities in the UK for a better understanding.

  • STEM courses - In general research-based programs are costlier than lecture-based courses.

  • Level of study - Well it is not always the case, at times the postgraduate degree can be more expensive than the undergraduate program, depending on the university and type of course.

International Undergraduate Tuition Fee

Most undergraduate courses typically last for three years, although some courses may be longer. For example, 'sandwich courses' may have an additional year in the industry. In Scotland, the undergraduate degree is for four years only.

As mentioned above, the cost of an undergraduate degree for an international student can vary greatly, depending on the university and degree program. On average, a degree will cost between £34,200 (INR 35 lacs) and £203,676 (INR 2,30,67,000) over three years. This does not include the cost of living, which can amount to an additional £18000-£20000/year.

International Postgraduate Tuition Fee

If you are considering a postgraduate degree, you can expect to pay higher fees than for an undergraduate degree. This is especially true for the most sought-after postgraduate programs like MBA, MEM and specialised doctorate programs. In general master's program are more affordable and gives faster ROI due to the short duration of the program.

Average postgraduate fees for International students

  • Lecture-based program - £16,000 -£18,000

  • Research-based program - £18,000-£20,000

  • Specialised programs (MBA, MEM) - £25,000 - £40,000

It is important to keep in mind that scholarships are more commonly available for postgraduate students than for those pursuing undergraduate degrees. As such, it is more likely that financial support will be available to help cover the costs of postgraduate studies.
