There has been a significant increase in the number of Indian students opting to pursue their higher education abroad. A "Higher Education Abroad" report by RedSeer suggests that the number of Indian students going abroad to study would grow to 1.8 million by 2024. Why is that? 

Indian students have seen multiple benefits of pursuing their higher education abroad from a professional stand point as well as personal. Listed below are some of the reasons why they choose to study abroad.

Quality of Education

The quality of education provided by the Indian Institutes is different from the education that is taught abroad. The curriculum of most Indian Institutes are outdated and hence may not be of much help when you start your professional journey. When you study abroad, the universities have a reputation which is globally recognized, and the curriculum is Up-to-date which means that the education a student gets from these foreign universities makes them a far better suited to face the challenges that the job markets have. 

Teaching methods

The domestic teaching methods and standards in countries within Asia is very different to that of the western style of teaching. In countries like India, China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc., the education system is completely classroom based. This would mean that the student will learn more theoretically in a closed-door environment. Even the teachings methods are outdated, and information exchange can be one-sided. The students often contribute very less. Although this has been changing in recent time.

Real time problem solving

When you study abroad the education moves away from simply being classroom based to real-world and real time education. Most professors would not just teach but also engage with students and provide an opportunity for a two-way communication. Solving real time problems and analyzing the issues at hand would mean that the theoretical understandings of the subject matter make students well equipped to deal with real life scenarios. No amount of classroom-based teaching will be able to provide such experiences which make students ready to take on challenges when they join companies.

Modern examination system

In India everyone knows that the examination system doesn’t really test the knowledge and understanding of the subject, rather it is the test of how much a student can remember. This is a very outdated way of assessing a student. Studying abroad means that most universities have a combination of written exams, assignments based on real time issues, practical problem solving etc. This would mean that as a student you will be able to use what you have learnt and demonstrate how you will make use of this knowledge to solve problems. This is by far the better way of assessing what student has learnt and how well they are equipped to deal with relevant and timely issues. At the end of the day this is what matters to the companies too, not just whether you remember what you read in the textbooks. 

Flexibility

Indian education system doesn’t provide enough time for students to focus on other areas or subjects. However, most universities abroad are flexible and provide enough time to learn either new subjects or even spend time fueling your passion. 

Financials

With most universities providing scholarships and opportunities to work part-time you as a student can be financially independent. This means no huge student loans and don’t have to depend on the family for financial support. With financial freedom comes an opportunity to pursue other things which would not have been possible otherwise.
