Tips for essay writing
If you are someone planning for higher education overseas then you will already be familiar with essays, however, the academic essays are completely different than your usual essays. This essay is the one that you use to pitch yourself. Here you need to be creative and give a clear and concise information about who you are and why you want to study in a college.
Remember that your college application essay must breathe life into your application. It should be able to capture your genuine personality, explaining who you are beyond a series of grades, test scores, and after-school activities. At this point it may seem a challenging task, however, remember you are your own author which means you can focus on what you want to share and what you don’t want to disclose.
If you’re still wondering what to disclose and what not then all you have to do is to think from the perspective of the college or the university admission officer who will be reading your essay. Now you need to ask yourself how you will be able to convey your background and what makes you unique enough to stand out amongst N number of applicants.
You need to imagine that you are standing in front of the admission committee and share a significant story or information about yourself. This could be about your achievements, goals, influences, challenges, triumphs, life experiences, or lessons learned. Having said all that it will be great to ponder upon the college or the university, what it stands for and how you will be able to be a good fit for the said college or university.
Admission officer reading your essay would probably end up reading numerous other essays from other prospective students, hence, it is very important that you make sure that your essay is precise, to point, and most importantly grammatically accurate. No one appreciates an essay with spelling and grammar mistakes. Make sure you always proofread and also ask your friends to proof read and make necessary corrections before you submit your final essay to the college or the university.
Some of the important things to remember:
- Brainstorm: This will give an idea as to how you want to approach the essay, what angle you want to take and what aspects you will include in the essay. Be clear about this before you begin writing, this will save time and help you to have a clear and concise essay.
- Draft: At the drafting stage you don’t have to limit to only one draft. You can create multiple drafts which would approach the essay from different perspective. Use this to take opinions and feedbacks to design the final essay.
- Be honest: Always be honest about what you have achieved and what you want to achieve. There is no space for false information or exaggeration, also what you intend to achieve must be practical and feasible enough to create interest within the people who read.
- Proofread and make corrections: Any essays with spelling and grammatical errors will not be very appealing to the readers. So always make sure that you spend additional time to get the essay perfect. Take help from others if needed, do not rush.
